Winter storage: how to lay up your motorcycle properly

Putting your bike away for winter? Follow these steps and it will start without trouble in spring.

A motorcycle that stands still for months has a hard time: the battery drains, fuel goes stale and tyres develop flat spots. Follow these steps and your bike will be ready to go in spring.

1. Wash and dry the bike

Road salt and dirt attack paint, aluminium and chrome. Wash the bike thoroughly, let it dry completely and treat bare metal parts with a protectant.

2. Change the oil

Used oil contains acids and contaminants. Change the oil and filter before storage, so the engine sits in clean oil all winter.

3. Fill the tank and stabilise

Fill the tank to limit condensation and rust, and add a fuel stabiliser. Then run the engine for a few minutes so the stabiliser reaches everywhere. If your bike has carburettors, check your owner's manual about draining the float bowls.

4. Lube the chain

Clean and lube the chain so it doesn't rust. See also our guide to chain maintenance.

5. Look after the battery

Connect a battery maintainer (trickle charger), or remove the battery and store it frost-free, charging it now and then.

6. Tyres

Inflate the tyres to the recommended pressure. Ideally put the bike on a paddock stand so the tyres don't rest on the same spot for months.

7. Store dry and covered

A dry, ventilated space is ideal. Use a breathable cover; a plastic sheet traps moisture and encourages rust.

In spring

Check tyre pressure, brakes, lights and fluids before your first ride, and take the first few kilometres easy. Then the season can begin!
