Buying a used motorcycle: the viewing checklist

What to look for in a used bike? Paperwork, mechanics and test ride: how to avoid a bad buy.

A used motorcycle can be a great buy, as long as you know what to look for. Take this checklist to the viewing, ideally along with someone who knows bikes.

Before you go

  • Look up the specifications and known weak points of the model, for example on MotorToko.
  • Ask for the bike to be cold when you arrive. A cold start tells you a lot.

Paperwork

  • Does the frame number (VIN) match the registration document?
  • Is there a service history with invoices or stamps?
  • Does the mileage match the bike's condition and history?

Mechanics

  • Chain and sprockets: is the chain tight and clean, are the teeth not hooked or pointed?
  • Tyres: enough tread, no cracks. Check the DOT code: tyres older than about five years harden.
  • Brakes: discs without deep grooves, enough pad material, brake fluid not dark.
  • Forks: no oil on the stanchions, smooth compression and rebound.
  • Leaks: look under the engine and around the gaskets.
  • Crash damage: scratches on levers, footpegs, bar ends or fairing point to a drop.

Test ride

Check for a smooth clutch, clean gear changes, tracking straight without pulling and no odd noises. Do all the lights and electronics work?

Still unsure?

Have the bike inspected by a motorcycle shop. On MotorToko you'll find shops near you.
